Montgomery College to Host National Premiere Spotlighting Parenting Students and Pioneering Curriculum on April 28

Montgomery College continues to lead the way in advancing equity in higher education. On April 28, the College will host the national premiere of Supporting the Basic Needs of Parenting Students—the first-ever professional development curriculum in the country designed specifically to help faculty and staff better support student parents.

The premiere event, titled Care & Curriculum: Spotlight on Student Parents — From Insight to Impact, will take place at the Parilla Performing Arts Center on the Rockville Campus from 5 to 7 p.m. A family-friendly evening, the event will spotlight the voices and stories of student parents who are balancing academics, work, and caregiving responsibilities.

Developed in partnership with national nonprofits Believe in Students and Ascend at the Aspen Institute, and featuring documentary shorts produced by Soledad O’Brien Productions, this curriculum shares powerful, real-life narratives from Montgomery College student parents. The content is designed to foster awareness, empathy, and action among faculty and staff across the nation.

“This is more than a curriculum,” said Dr. Ja’Bette Lozupone, project lead and MC administrator. “It’s a movement that begins with listening to our students—and reshaping our institutions to better support their success.”

The evening will include:

  • Opening remarks from Montgomery College leadership and representatives from Believe in Students
  • Live panel discussion featuring student and faculty participants
  • Sneak preview of the training’s compelling video content
  • Networking reception with project partners, funders, and VIP guests

Montgomery College is proud to be the first institution in the country to implement this innovative training, reinforcing its commitment to educational equity, basic needs support, and a two-generation approach to student success.

Educators, community leaders, and student support advocates are encouraged to attend. Members of the media are encouraged to cover the event.
